Thanks for landing on my website. Spend a while looking around and by all means get in touch with any thoughts or observations. My quest is to build a body of paintings depicting every corner of Yorkshire: landscape, towns, the coast and industry.A photo takes a split second. Paintings take time: I’m currently spending around 40 hours on each one! It’s time well spent and each painting is infused with enthusiasm for the setting and particularly the people I find.So far, West Yorkshire and the East Coast are dominating but I aim to spread my coverage. See the map below for upcoming prospects 👇🏻.Only a few framed prints of each painting will be for sale. This gives you exclusivity and keeps things manageable for me (see Backstory). It would be fab if you could support the project by investing in an existing or upcoming painting (see Contact).

’Loftus’ Timelapse 👆🏻Here’s a little insight into the sequence of how I make my paintings.I usually start out with at least one photo that I took, probably a few to build up the picture.Loftus is based on one of my own photos and several google street views.

Ey up is it AI?Be assured I am a human!
If you’re in Yorkshire I will personally hand you your painting.
I use a digital art platform called Procreate and the team behind it say they are deliberately not using AI in order to cherish human creativity.
All for that.
My art takes time, thought and thousands of my marks & strokes.
Why Digital?Well first of all I don’t like mess! Also going for iPad art has allowed me to get to the ideas in my head a little more quickly. The other thing is I’m a full time Dad and the great thing about digital art is that I can pick up from where I left off, bazz along for 20 minutes or half an hour and then put it down again all the while juggling domestic nirvana.

Back Story

MFM launch April 1989 in Chester. I’m first from the right.

From Broadcasting to Brushstrokes: My Journey into ArtArt has given me a new sense of purpose after a long career in broadcasting and journalism. My journey has taken me from radio studios to the streets of Yorkshire and now to the canvas, where I capture the landscapes and stories that inspire me.

Yorkshire Art detail lashing rain

A Life in Sound and StoriesI started in radio, playing pop music on stations like ABC Radio in Waterford and Rock FM in Lancashire. The world of jingles, snappy one-liners, and perfectly timed intros was my life—until I realized I was living inside my headphones, disconnected from the world outside. So, I made a change.I retrained as a journalist and took to the roads of West Yorkshire, reporting for BBC Radio Leeds. I was never drawn to hard news but found myself captivated by local quirks, personalities, and the hidden stories that gave places their character.

Turning PointJournalism is relentless, and after years of chasing stories—mainly depressing ones during the pandemic—I reached breaking point. In 2022, severe burnout forced me to stop. My body shut down, and my relationship with work changed completely……then, one evening in Dewsbury, I saw a sunset that reminded me of this Vermeer painting 👇🏻.

‘View of Delft’ by Johannes Vermeer c. 1660 (Mauritius, The Hague)

yorkshire art

My first painting: ‘Dewsbury’ 2023.

All you need is an ideaThe urge to capture that moment sparked something new. Determined to learn, I found guidance at The Art Room in Denby Dale, where I discovered that, with the right approach, anyone can draw and paint. I took the best part of my old job—observing the world around me—and turned it into a new creative journey. My Artistic ProcessI work digitally, painting with an Apple Pencil on an iPad Pro. While digital tools offer flexibility, my process is still hands-on, with thousands of brushstrokes bringing each scene to life. To maintain quality and exclusivity, I print each artwork in very limited runs, using high-grade cotton rag art paper and giclée printing techniques.Exhibitions & RecognitionThe response to my work has been humbling. My first sale sent me sky-high, and more have followed. A highlight was having my work selected for the Ferens Open, a prestigious exhibition in Hull’s city centre.

Sales & Collecting My WorkEach painting is one of a kind—I release only a handful of prints for each piece. I personally oversee printing, cutting the mounts, and framing every work to ensure it meets my standards.Beyond the Screen: Finding the Right AudienceSocial media is fast-paced, but my art is meant to be appreciated slowly. I work slowly too as my mental health condition requires I ease back from time to time. This is a little eccentric but art appreciators don’t mind! Facebook has been useful to spread the word and connect but Instagram is a bit FM for me, living on AM (Magic 828 reference there - a great local station gone like so many others).
All told nothing compares to seeing my work framed and displayed in homes and galleries across Yorkshire 👉🏻 View my Gallery
A Final Note on Mental HealthIf my story resonates, know that you’re not alone. I’ve had professional help, and it makes all a difference. Finding something that reignites your passion—whether it’s painting, writing, or something else—can be life-changing.Thanks for reading, and a big thank you to my wife and family, without whom none of this would be possible.March 2025I hope to add to my story from time to time - check back in ‘Latest’ for updates. Thx, D

Awards and Exhibitions

Awards are silly and worthless…unless you win one, in which case they’re brilliant!

Artwork of the YearI am part of a great outfit called ‘The Art Room’ led by art teacher Sean Barry in Denby Dale and we held an exhibition at Skelmanthorpe Library.
My painting ‘Scarborough’ won Artwork of the Year (see gallery).
Out of the hundreds of votes from visitors in person and online, this was the individual work which was most popular.
I love my ‘Scenes of Yorkshire’ art theme but the idea others like it too gives me great encouragement.

First thing I’ve ever won!

Ferens OpenThe Ferens Gallery in Hull is fantastic city centre venue which has hosted an open art exhibition for emerging artists for many years.
I was over the moon to be accepted in 2024 for my work ‘North Road, Hull’.
My painting was on display all through the summer.

Summer 2024 - me at the Ferens Open, Hull

Urban lifeI love the urban environment of our Yorkshire towns so I was delighted to be accepted to this local exhibition in Skelmanthorpe.

My own corner at ‘Urban Life’ exhibition

Artwalk WakefieldVarious venues across Wakefield hand over space to local artists on a special one night event.
In January 2025 I had my first go at this with five art works on display at The Priory.
It was great to meet and chat to art fans and wonderful to hear appreciative comments about my work.

July 27th 2025CleckhuddersfaxUnlike folk who were born in Yorkshire, those of us who settled here had to have a very first time entering the county. For me it was in the dark(!) in 1992. Ascending the Pennines on the M62 was auspicious, rising over the hills into a different land. Young and daft it was fairly scary with the lights of Greater Manchester giving way to dark mysterious Saddleworth Moor. The first settlement of any note was to my left and my companion introduced the sea of lights below as “Cleckhuddersfax”. I tried to take in this conurbation and wondered at thousands of properties and their stories below. I now realise that Cleckhuddersfax is in fact Elland! One of the things I’ve enjoyed about painting the town recently was contemplating how nervous and wary I was of this new slightly forbidding land as a lad. These days I’m very settled in Yorkshire and far from being scary it has brought contentment, particularly when I felt the warmth of the people around Upper Edge who egged me on to do great things with their wonderful view.July 5th 2025Wow there’s a giant toilet in the middle of an Elland housing estate! 👇🏻My Elland painting is nearly finished and I’ve been very pleased with the new oil brush I have been using. It’s allowed a more expressive side to come out and adds texture as you go .Whilst browsing my reference photos I came across this weird piece of architecture seemingly in the middle of one of the housing estates!Looks like a toilet seat. There must be a rational explanation - keep checking for updates! But in the meantime isn’t it funny what you see when you look at a place very closely and as the man himself (Hockney) says that’s what it all about.Look out for the ELLAND reveal next week!!

June 21st 2025After this fun craft fair ☝🏻 at Gristhorpe and Lebberston Village Hall, I’ve had a rethink on how you can get hold of my art.I’m now making all upcoming paintings available for £10! I’m still hoping to print and frame 1 or 2, in gallery style quality but I have managed to find a way of getting a good quality print to you at this price. Why the change of heart? I realise there are not many out there who can afford big ticket paintings, so this will enable more folk to see and buy my views.I’m one who believes in the therapy of art, the benefit you get by concentrating on your ideas and getting them across but I also believe in the social side of art. The discussions, the observations and things you never thought of as the artist but the viewer adds to the experience.Seems to be working so far! Sure, its pure economics but if more people can see and enjoy my depictions of Yorkshire, all the better. 👍🏻 DJune 6th 2025What’s going on with the June weather? It seems like February is making a return. It’s prompted me to highlight my HORNSEA painting on the front page, as we made a day trip there in August and were greeted by a torrential rain storm. One man’s misery is another man’s opportunity! I snapped away with my camera, spent ages perfecting the effect of rain on tarmac and I love the end result, particularly the reflections in the road.
Get in touch if you want to enquire/purchase. As usual I’m only printing two or three.
May 21st 2025…..David Hockney has inspired me to do my next painting and it’s because I saw him talking about space in this video.
I have several prospects queuing up but I just couldn’t decide on which one to take on.
Well I have a scene overlooking Elland from up at the Rock Tavern which I think will lend itself to Hockney’s techniques.
Here’s the view…but the painting will be…different!

May 15th 2025…..Welcome back to life in the slow lane.Just displayed my latest painting: LOFTUS. After no less than two failed attempts I finally had a wonderful trip up to Loftus and I’m delighted to report that my potential client waded in with a purchase for number one of three.I photographed the setting on a previous visit to see the work of Clothydle Vergnes-Boyce as part of the North Yorkshire Open Studios. That was last summer! The intriguing scene was unfolding as I was walking up the Main Street and I like the end result. It’s open to interpretation. I personally love the idea of looking deep into the bowels of a V8 Mustang engine for inspiration/meaning/emotion…Any thoughts? Drop me a line: mailto: [email protected]

Yorkshire Wolds painting

April 23 25…..Back to the drawing boardSeveral people mentioned to me that the tractor and figure in my Yorkshire Wolds painting don’t quite work. One of them was the lady who lives on the farm featuring this fab landscape. She told me the land is in fact owned by Lord Halifax! Maybe I should pay him a visit with the painting under my arm. Before I do that I am going to rework the painting by removing the figure and tractor (as shown). I could leave it as just a landscape but the human element is one of my trademarks so I’m thinking someone leaning on the gate instead and looking into the view.Any thoughts? Drop me a line: mailto: [email protected]

April 13 25.....Hand FinishedI was very pleased today with the frames and mounts I got for my latest LOFTUS painting. The 'Sepia' colour brown mount and frame featuring some gunmetal strips are perfect for the subject matter. More on that next week after I visit a client and give them an exclusive first look.I really believe hand finishing the process with mount and frame give
my paintings that uniqueness and individuality as opposed to mass produced prints.
I am now including my signature and the number of the limited edition in the prints themselves, so that each print is in fact unique.March 31 25......CalderdaleThe Calderdale Open Art competition bowled me over with the quality of art on display, over at the Smith Gallery in Brighouse.
The theme this year is 'nature' and I want to give it a whirl.
I have two paintings which I think have nature at their heart. So it's fingers crossed for selection.

March 26 25.....Latest PaintingHORNSEA DENTISTLate last year I popped in to a few shops on Newbegin to show them my original Hornsea painting (see gallery). Sarah from Newbegin Dental loved it but was sad their shop wasn't featured. It was snowing as we spoke so I took a few photos and we agreed on a commission.I've enjoyed painting this one, using a new brush to get the lying snow effect and I made a left and right footprint stamp for the indentations in the snow.Delivered the painting today and it was very well received. Many thanks to Sarah and Scott for supporting my project. They are the proud owners of number-one-of-two. The other print will not be for sale. It will stay with me for exhibitions etc.Whilst in Hornsea I popped in to The Gallery. What a great focus for painting and sculpture and I am proud to have my own corner featuring a couple of my works, including the other Hornsea one 👇🏻

March 23 25…..Are Facebook Adverts worth it?Just blew £40 on a Facebook advert!
Yes my budget ends in one zero. I’m not looking to be a millionaire but I realise you have to tickle these things to make them work.
First go and the main feedback was the email I received several times a day to say another fiver had departed from my bank account.I’m trying to get my head around the metrics supplied by Facebook and Google but as far as I can make out 200 people had a look at my website…kind of ok!I can also see that no less than two people were on the brink of contacting me, without actually doing so. Perhaps with an observation (very welcome) or a purchase (great) or maybe just to see what other buttons there were to press (I do that).I guess that means I was on the brink of one, maybe two sales? Maybe I needed to have a higher FB budget. Or I should have kept my £40 and not bothered.March 14 25….ProjectorI rang up the subject of my next painting - a shopkeeper in Loftus to enquire what the weird pole and hat/mini roof were next to the shop. “A projector”, was his reply. “They’re supposed to be projecting something onto the building opposite but we have yet to see it”.Because Loftus is in the historic county of Yorkshire but the modern county of Cleveland I enquired whether he was Yorkshire or Cleveland? “Yorkshire” was the reply.Excellent. Safe to say I will be heading back to Loftus to let people see the finished work. Watch this space.March 9 25……LoftusI’ve decided to include the historic county of Yorkshire in my plans.
In fact I’ve started work on a painting of Loftus near Saltburn. It features a Ford Mustang.
At some point I’d like to feature Earby where half the town think they’re Yorkshire and the other half Lancashire!
